Fashion was born at the beginning of ancient Egypt prior to 3100Bc. Clothing in ancient Egypt was embellished with gems and jewelry, clothes were designed not only for beauty but also to keep cool in the warm dessert.
The most common textile in Egypt was linen as it was made out of flax plan. Spinning, weaving, and sewing were very important techniques, as well plant dyes were used in the process of making the clothes.
Garments were simply constructed as men wore wrap-around skirts which were belted at the waist while women’s clothes kept on changing as each kingdom took over. Ancient Egyptian women mostly wore a simple sheath dress called a kalasiris, these types of dresses were held up by one or two straps and were worn down to the ankle, while the upper edge could be worn above or below the breasts. The length of the dress denoted the social class of the wearer. Beading or feathers were also used as an embellishment on the dress and over the dress, women had a choice of wearing shawls, capes, or robes. The shawl was a piece of fine linen cloth around 4 feet wide by 13 or 14 feet long as this was mostly worn pleated.
